Behold! The Best Indoor Plants for Your Home – For The Not So Green Thumb Plantita

If you are like me and you like the aesthetic look of having indoor plants in your home, but you lack the inherent skills to actually not kill them – well, you’ve come to the right place. I have found easy to take care of, resilient indoor plants that are perfect for the likes of you and me.

Snake Plant

Often referred to as mother in laws tongue (although I don’t have any idea on the correlation) or Sansevieria plant. Its striped, pointy leaves grow upward in sword-like fashion.

This plant is aesthetically pleasing and nice to place near a side table. It is a native of Africa so very drought resistant. It just needs low light and minimal watering so you can just place it in a corner all by itself and forget about it as you go about your busy work week.

It is known also known to purify the air, giving off a lot of oxygen so that’s an added bonus for having these at home.

Peace Lily

This elegant looking plant has raindrop shaped leaves and white anthurium like flowers. This is perfect for beginners since it also doesn’t need a lot of watering, just make sure to water it when the top soil is dry and the leaves start drooping.

It doesn’t want direct light so its perfect indoors. Just make sure it gets a lot of bright indirect light if you want to see its white flowers. Otherwise, you’ll be happy since it will give you lots of green foliage for your home.

Money Plant

The Money plant or Jade plant is from the succulent family Crassula. It is aptly named since it has flat, round and coin like leaves. It is one of the most popular indoor plant especially to those who believe in Feng Shui since it is believed to exude positive energies in a room.

This plant is also low maintenance since it can thrive in artificial light and can survive in hot room temperatures. But when you water it, make sure it is well watered and then forget about it. It is advised to wait till the soil is dry before you water them again.

This is different from the Money Tree though which needs a lot of TLC (tender loving care) to grow properly so we won’t be talking about that for this article.

String Of Hearts

The String of Hearts is so called since its little heart shaped leaves are stringed together by its trailing stems. It prefers bright, indirect sunlight since direct sun exposure might scorch its leaves. It does prefer moist soil so be sure to water it occasionally. Like succulents, you can wait to let the soil in this plant dry out before the next watering session.

Since this plant has long trailing stems, you can place it in a hanging planter and hang it in a windowsill. Make sure though that it does not get direct sunlight.

Philodendron

This plant hails from the Caribbean and likes humid places. You can place it in the bathroom and it will thrive well there, giving a touch of greenery for your eyes as you shower.

It is a climber, so you can also position it in an upright planter with a pole and would look good indoors. You can water it every 1-2 weeks and add a little extra care by trimming its unruly leaves as needed.

There you go, some of my favorite plants to grow since they are all basically low maintenance. Perfect for people who are not endowed with the mighty green thumb. But none of our house guests will know that secret if they see these beauties indoors in your home — trust me!
